End-organ Damage:... End-organ Damage: Prevention and Therapy
The increasing knowledge regarding senile hypertension mirrors the developing of gerontological research and clinical geriatrics. A long time seems to have passed since the misleading concept of a "physiological" age dependant increase in arterial blood pressure levels. The story quickly went through the acceptance of large numbers of elderly people being treated by pharmacological therapy and through the confirmation of the advisability of preventing risk factors even in late life. At the - provisional - end of the route, we have been given the opportunity to investigate the possibility of treating and preventing secondary end-organ damages in older hypertensives. End-organ damage stands for - beyond mortality - morbidity, disability, national health service expenditures, high impact of the disease on an individual and social level. Preventing such a burden of consequences is the new challenge. And we are very honored that so many researches and clinicians accepted to face themselves with the outstanding topics related in occasion of the meeting we had the pleasure to organize. The success of the Congress on Hypertension in the Elderly derives from the contribution of more than 450 colleagues who attended the meeting. Much appreciated was the opportunity to acquire knowledge of the most recent advances in research, prevention and treatment of senile hypertension as well as the occasion to participate in a debate with the outstanding researchers in the field and to meet colleagues from all over the world. The opening ceremony gave us the dimension of the interest the theme has been arising since - far beyond the usual introductory remarks - a number of personalities wanted to officially underline the aspect of the debate the organizations they represented were concerned in. We want to remind here and to especially thank: Professor M. Condorelli (Presidente Consiglio Sanitario Nazionale), Professor L. Frati (Preside I Facolt? di Medicina "La Sapienza"), Professor A. Vecchione (Preside II Facolt? di Medicina "La Sapienza"), Professor R. Lauro (Preside Facolt? di Medicina "Tor Vergata"), Professor F. Rengo (Presidente SIGG and FIRI), Professor M. Palleschi (Presidente SIGO), Dr. R. Fatarella (Amministratore Straordinario Azienda Policlinico Umberto I). We present a selection of papers we think could delineate a useful guide to focus the leading areas of research and suggest new clinical and therapeutic approaches. While introducing the proceedings of the 4th edition, we have the pleasure to make an appointment for the 5th edition. Looking forward to meeting you in the future, Vincenzo Marighano
